A Case of Diphenylhydantion Induced Hyperglycemia

Abstract
Diphenylhydantoin (DPH) is the one of the most widely used anticonvulsants for the treatment and prevention of seizures.
DPH inhibit insulin release and diminished insulin response to an intense and sustained glucose stimulation and then induce the hyperglycemia in the animal studies, and in the man.
Marked hyperglycemia, and Diabetic coma have been noted in the chronically DPH-treated patients and the blood sugars retured to normal on discontiuation of DPH.
I recently experienced one case of the hyperglycemia occurred as a complication of DPH intoxication (normal range: 50.8~20.3 ug/mL), and improved completely after discontinuation of DPH.
